Resources for College Counselors
On February 29, 2008, Lake Forest College and Associated Colleges of Illinois sponsored a professional-development workshop geared toward high school counselors who serve first-generation college students and other traditionally underrepresented student populations. Approximately 60 education professionals came together for a day of sharing, learning, and exchanging ideas to reach out to students in effective and meaningful ways. The three major discussion topics included: "Working with Parents & Families of First-Generation Students," Preparing Students for College Enrollment," and "Working with Students in a College Preparatory High School Curriculum."
A number of resources were shared during the program, and we have made those available. We have also made available the summary points from the workshop dialogue, and hope that you might continue this dialogue within your own offices and organizations. The list of resources clearly does not encompass the needs of every professional, or of every student, but we hope that some of these articles and Web sites provide some support and ideas.

Thank you to those counselors who joined us and enthusiastically shared their passion for college access for first-generation students. We look forward to continuing these conversations in the future, and we were pleased to add to our network of enthusiastic professionals.
